A History of U-Haul (1945 - 1954)
He spent his junior year of high school (he stayed 
home that year) cutting cordwood and selling it (with 
his father) in an open air weekend market in Salem, 
OR., transporting it on a truck with no brakes.  L.S. 
stated that the poor soil on their farm could not sup-
port much of a living.  He called it a “red dirt” farm.
