a medium class hotel in the city.  He leased me 
the barber shop in the basement of this hotel 
at a very nominal rental.  Within six months 
, haG foXr EarEers ZorNing in the Easement of 
this hotel – all young fellows – and I was “in the 
money.”  From there I expanded my barber shop 
operations to open a three-chair shop in the St. 
Francis Hotel in Albany.  In addition, I estab-
lished a beauty shop in Corvallis and one in 
Albany.  These barber and beauty shops formed 
a small chain, Zhich , iGentifieG Zith the slogan 
“A Shoen Shop.”  The main idea was to earn 
money to attend college, but soon I was earn-
ing more money than necessary and possibly 
more money than was good for a student.  These 
shops operated for the next three years or until

at Oregon State College and entered the  
University of Oregon Medical School in  
Portland, Oregon.
