Dad was on a long approach to Akron/Canton Regional
Airport fl ying a Cessna P210 when he lost power and wasn’t
able to restart the engine. He thought he had found a fi eld
that was hard enough to land on so he did not retract the
landing gear. In fact, the fi eld was soft and the plane fl ipped
on it’s top as soon as the wheels touched the ground. Neither
L.S., Carol, nor Shauna was hurt. It was eventually found
that the crankshaft on the plane had broken in fl ight. Cessna
paid to replace the plane.
L.S. was certifi ed to fl y single engine and multi-engine air-
craft. He was also “instrument rated” which meant he was
certifi ed to fl y by instruments alone without any ability to see
the ground. When he passed his written and fl ying exams
for the instrument certifi cation, the FAA Flight Certifi cation
pilot told him that he was the oldest person ever to have
been instrument certifi ed in the Arizona district. He was 63
years old at the time.
