     7he financing necessar\ for an e[pansion 
program has been the largest single problem

taNeoff on one XseG to finance railroaG cars 
aroXnG  anG is NnoZn as the 3hilaGelphia 
Plan.  This plan is probably one of the most 
XniTXe financing plans in operation in the 
8niteG 6tates toGa\  7he frameZorN of the plan 
Zas set Xp in the sXmmer of , EXt it tooN a 
lot of organi]ation ZorN Eefore it coXlG Ee pXt 
into effect.  All existing trailers had to be re-
numbered, and many thousands of dollars worth 
of punch card equipment had to be ordered and 
delivered.  This plan went into effect about  
April 1952, and since that time (editor’s note: 
less than two years later) nearly two million  
dollars of outside money has come into the  
U-Haul Trailer Rental System. 
     Under this plan, individuals or groups of 
inGiYiGXals ma\ pXrchase a Áeet of  or more 
U-Haul Co. trailers.  The trailer owner then con-
tracts with Arcoa Inc., for the operation of his 
trailer Áeet in the 8+aXl 7railer 5ental 6\s-
tem and a sharing of the income from the rental 
of the trailers.  We never actively solicited new 
)leet 2Zners  7he first )leet 2Zner learneG of 
the program via a discussion that was inciden-
tal to another business transaction and he was
