“I was born rich and inherited a fortune.” 
Dad used to say this but I think he got it 
from his father, as is probably true with 
many of these expressions.  By this I 
believe he meant that he was born to a 
good family, as a white man, with excep-
tional abilities, in a free country, and that 
during his life he had many experiences 
that further enriched him as a person.  
Actually he was born poor, and inherited 
no assets.
