During my hospitalization  
at the U.S. Navy Hospital at Corona, California, 
, haG ample time to let m\ minG ZorN on the 
possibilities of the trailer rental industry and, 
having an active imagination, I can say that  
I fairly well laid the plans for the present  
8+aXl 7railer 5ental 6\stem  , GiG not ZorN 
out the details of the organization, but I cer-
tainly saw the potentials of the one-way trailer 
rental industry and formulated a plan of opera-
tion.  Before I had been out of the Navy more 
than tZo ZeeNs the first 8+aXl &o trailer  
Zas a parNeG on a serYice station lot anG  
being offered for rent.  I was married to a  
capable and educated woman, who was willing 
to help and who had considerable ability in her 
own right.  My wife is the former Anna Mary 
&art\ of 5iGgefielG, :ashington  )or the first 
six months things didn’t go well, for I made 
nXmEer of mistaNes, EXt , ZoXlG sa\ that in 
the first si[ months, in other ZorGs the last si[ 
months of , Ze GiG la\ the groXnG ZorN for 
a trailer rental business, although we did not 
maNe an\ mone\
     7hose trailers Zere reall\ MXnNers, anG , haG 
to pay a price of $100 to $150 each for them and 
Zhen the\ Zent oXt to ZorN, the\ soon EleZ 
tires and burnt out bearings and generally  
gave a lot of grief.  This went on while I spent 
possibly $2,000 for trailers.  While we were able 
to rent trailers, and they earned a fair income, 
the e[penses necessar\ to Neep them operating 
ate up the earnings.  This aptly illustrated why 
people who had been manufacturing these trail-
ers and selling them had not been interested in 
the trailer rental business.
