On graduating from High 
school, I learned the barber trade and plied 
this trade on and off for the next eight to ten 
years while attempting to 
become a medical doctor.
     In the fall of 1937, I reg-
istered in the pre-medical 
school at Oregon State  
College in Corvallis, Oregon.

payment on a barber shop 
near the college campus.   
I barbered between classes 
and on Saturdays and man-
aged to pay for the barber 
shop that winter and get  
in m\ first \ear of college  
The next Spring my father had a motel project 
going near 6alem, 2regon, anG neeGeG mone\; 
so I sold the shop and loaned him the money.  
The motel did not meet with 
much success, and I was out my 
$750.00, which in those days 
was a fair sum.

Oregon State College for my

January I had run out of money 
and was cutting hair for two

Corvallis businessman named 
Julian McFadden, who owned
