trailers as well as “U-Haul Co. Trailer Rental 
$2.00 per day.”  Though we were yet to get trail-
ers into the state of California, we were doing 
business in Oregon and Washington.  We had 
continuous trouble with tires, because it was 
still nearly impossible to buy new tires.  I re-

sent a brand new trailer on which were installed 
the first set of neZ tires that Ze Zere aEle to 
obtain.  This trailer was our pride and joy.  The 
customer was to deliver the trailer to my broth-
er-in-law, Bernard Shaner, who had his home in 
Los Angeles.  We charged the customer $25.00 
for the trip.  When the trailer was delivered to 
6haner he storeG it oYernight in the EacN\arG  
of his home anG Zhen he checNeG the ne[t 
morning it was gone.  That was trailer #81  
and we have never seen it since.
     ,n  Zith the total Áeet of possiEl\  
trailers, we began to rent one-way across the 
United States.  A map of the U.S. with a banner 
displaying the words “One-Way Anywhere” was 
cop\righteG anG painteG on the EacN of eYer\ 
U-Haul Co. trailer.  Telephone directory and 
newspaper advertising stated that U-Haul Co. 
trailers could be rented one-way anywhere in 
the United States.  Most people thought I was  
a bit crazy, but we did in fact rent trailers  
one-way anywhere.
